I’m thinking that if you modify a color with its complement, then you warm it or cool it. So, if you want a cool orange, you would dull it/cool it with blue or one of its splits (blue green or blue violet). If I were painting an orange, I might use this cooler orange on the shaded side. Therefore, the complement-modified orange is “cool”.
